U.S. softwood and panel markets - 53rd week, 2009

Trading in framing lumber closed 2009 on a quiet note. Extensive
mill
curtailments and many traders away for the holidays essentially
guaranteed a quiet finish. Those who did make it to work were often
preoccupied with inventory or other year-end chores. A smattering of
fill-in purchases and a few block deals prompted some traders to report
that activity exceeded their low expectations. Most buyers were content
to delay decisions until after the New Year's holiday.

Structural panel markets also concluded the year with little
fanfare.
OSB trading finished 2009 on a quiet note. Most of the few fill-in
orders that were placed were done at or close to previously established
levels. Southern Pine sheathing traded in a relatively narrow price
range amid a pedestrian sales pace. Several western Fir plywood mills
invited counters to clear offerings for the week of January 4 or
sooner. Buyers responded, particularly in the Northeast, and many order
files moved into the week of January 11.
