Abitibi-Consolidated Reports First Quarter Loss Due to Prevailing Market Conditions

In the first quarter of 2002, Abitibi-Consolidated reported operating income of $51 million, compared to $368 million recorded in the same period last year. OSB prices rose steadily through the first quarter, averaging US $163 per Msf (7/16-inch basis) North Central, 23% higher than the first quarter of 2001. West Fraser posts earnings of $26.6 million for the quarter

West Fraser announced first quarter earnings of $26.6 million with improved results in its lumber and panel divisions offset by weaker earnings in its pulp and paper operations. Rayonier benefits from higher pulp and lumber prices

Rayonier (reported first quarter net income of $9.4 million, compared to $7.9 million in fourth quarter 2001 and $12.3 million in last year's first quarter.
