US softwood lumber production up 2.8%

U.S. sawmills produced 27.565 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber in the first 10 months of 2016, an increase of 2.8% from 26.815 bbf in the same period of 2015, according to the latest Lumber Track report by the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon.

Western U.S. sawmills contributed 11.695 bbf to the 10-month total, a 2.1% gain from 11.452 bbf a year earlier, while southern sawmills accounted for 14.607 bbf – up 3.4% from 14.133 bbf.

In October 2016, U.S. sawmills produced 2.688 bbf, a decline of 4.5% from 2.816 bbf in October 2015, and down 1.4% from 2.728 bbf in the previous month.

Western sawmills contributed 1.168 bbf to October’s production volume, down 1.2% year-over-year from 1.182 bbf, but up 1.0% from 1.157 bbf in September 2016. Output by Southern sawmills was 1.397 bbf, down 7.2% from 1.505 bbf a year earlier, and down 3.4% from the volume in September 2016 of 1.446 bbf.

Apparent U.S. softwood lumber consumption was 40.887 bbf in the first 10 months, up 10.5% from 37.013 bbf a year earlier. Consumption in October was 3.930 bbf, a year-over-year drop of 1.2% from 3.979 bbf in October last year, but up 0.2% from consumption in the previous month of 3.924 bbf.
