At the beginning of the spring, in March, the cost of wood pellets in Germany has decreased by EUR 10/tonne on average, the German Energy Wood and Pellet Association (DEPV) reported. A tonne of pellets (for a 6t purchase) currently costs EUR 273.69, which represents a 3.5% decline over February.

'Due to a short warm winter, the traders' stocks of pellets are well filled. Therefore, many pellet dealers have taken spring actions,' Martin Bentele, the executive chairman of DEPV, explained.

In Germany, the prices in March 2014 have registered the following regional differences: as in recent months, the cheapest pellets can be found in northern and eastern Germany, where they currently cost EUR 271.86/t (for a 6t purchase quantity). In central Germany, pellet customers pay on average EUR 275.19 per tonne, while in southern Germany they pay slightly less (EUR 273,52/t).

Larger quantities (26t) were traded in March 2014, at the following rates: North/East- EUR 252.00/t; Centre- EUR 257.81/t; South- EUR 261.31/t (all including VAT).
