Drax Kohlekraftwerk Selby British company Drax Energy plans to completely convert three units of its coal-fired power plant in Selby into wood-pellet fired stations by 2017. The overall investment volume is estimated at nearly 880 million euro (700 million pounds). Nowadays Drax produces 12.5% of its output from renewable and sustainable biomass by co-firing. The conversion of the first unit should finish in the second quarter of next year, while the second unit is to follow in 2014. The project is planned to be finalized by 2017 and produce up to 4 percent of the country’s power by using wood pellets.

According to Bloomberg Businessweek, the total demand for wood pellets for the 3 units is estimated to reach approximately 7.5 million tons a year by 2017. For comparison, the DEPV expects a total production volume of 2 million tons in Germany this year. The storage site should reach 700,000 tons alone.

The largest British pellet consumer is the RWE Tilbury power station with a consumption of about 2.3 million tons a year.
