In 2009 the Austrian wood industry, covering the complete value chain from forest up to paper and wood products, showed a trade surplus of € 3.08 billion. The traditionally export-oriented industry (70% in timber industry and 85% in paper and pulp industry) did not endure the global economic crisis and the ensuing run-down of major export markets without any marks. The total import value of wood, paper and wood products in 2009 was € 4.74 billion, 9.3 percent below last year's level (€ 5.23 billion). Exports totaled € 7.82 billion during the same period, down 15.5 percent compared to 2008 (€ 9.25 billion).
