The Latvian government has decided to expand the use of wood construction products in new buildings, reports Latvian Ministry of Economics.

Thus, the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers approved amendments, which allow construction of wooden building up to 18 meters high or about 6 floors.

Earlier, the maximum permitted height for the wooden buildings in Latvia was 8 meters or about 3 floors.

The new regulations apply to residential and public buildings such as hotels, guest houses, offices, administrative buildings etc.

According the Minister for Economics and Deputy Prime Minister of Latvia Arvils Ašeradens, the changes will stimulate growth of the Latvian economy, will contribute to the development of the Latvian wooden structures production, will increase the demand for wooden building materials and will encourage the Latvian wooden construction per se.

"Our entrepreneurs gaining more experience in wood building design and construction, will open new export opportunities," commented Arvils Ašeradens.

The above mentioned amendments will come into force on 1 May 2017.
