As the European interest for biofuel in general and pellets in particular keeps growing due to eco-friendly policies accepted in the EU, Russia doesn’t fail to use this opportunity to expand supplies of pellets to the European countries.

According to Eurostat data, in 2014 EU imported 27% more pellets from Russia in terms of volume than in 2013, with the Russian pellet supply volumes having come up to 825,210 tons. There was a substantial growth in terms of value as well. Russian pellet imports increased by 26% in 2014 year-on-year and amounted to 107.57 million euros.

Top-5 Russian pellet importing EU countries in 2014 were: Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Finland and Germany.

In 2014, Denmark, the leading EU importer of Russian pellets shipped 23% more pellets from Russia in terms volume, with the total import volume having come up to 388,394 tons. The total import amount equalled 53.27 million euros (+26%).

Germany’s imports of Russian pellets were lower than those of Denmark and Sweden due to rather strong domestic pellet industry.

Sweden imported just 4% more pellets from Russia in 2014. Despite a slight increase in imports in terms of volume, the total amount of imports in value terms went down by 6%.

A stable increase of pellet imports from Russia was observed in Finland. This country imported 32% more Russian pellets in 2014 (45,073 tons in 2014 against 34,049 in 2013). The total imports amount was up by 31% having come up to 5.32 million euros.
