Pfleiderer AG, Germanys biggest producer of engineered wood products, could tie in with the positive trend in its first quarter and increased sales by 7.3% to € 381.4 million in the second. In the first half of the year, sales of the wood-based panel manufacturer amounted to € 737 million, up 6.4% from the reference period a year earlier.
In July the Thermowood Division of the German federal sawmill association BSHD started a project for quality assurance of thermo-treated wood. Together with the institute of wood technology Dresden IHD and the faculty of architecture and landscape of the Leibniz University of Hanover, the division will work out product specifications to develop a quality seal.<
In 2009 the Austrian wood industry, covering the complete value chain from forest up to paper and wood products, showed a trade surplus of € 3.08 billion.
Egger finished its fiscal year 2009/2010 with a slight sales decline of 2% to € 1.478 billion. Thus the Tyrolean manufacturer of wood-based panels came better through a difficult year than many of its competitors.
From January to May oak lumber exports of German sawmills amounted to 39,737 m³, slightly more than 14% over the reference period last year. Large quantities sold to China were the decisive factor for that development. In May 2,218 m³ could be marketed there. After the beech now German oak is getting more and more popular in China.
Despite an increase of 14.2% in planed spruce lumber exports in May compared to the previous year, exports in the first five months of 2010 were still 14.4% below the reference period in 2009 and amounted to almost 220,000 m³. Export values rose by 42.2% in May. For the period January to May, the increase was 3.4%.
The April has slowed down the downward tendency in oak lumber imports to Germany. By force of an 3% increase, the annualized decrease in the year to April was only 0.5%.
Softwood lumber prices continue to rise. While sawmills reported a slowdown in price increases, the figures of the German Federal Statistical Office Destatis in Wiesbaden for the month of June show further gaining prices.
