Maritime pine price stabilising at a good level in the French south-west

In the end of 2016, the French Aquitaine forest auctions are coherent and their results are similar. One of the latest auctions, held by the forest experts on November 17, 2016, confirms the results obtained a month earlier at another important auction held by ONF in the same region (146,000 m3 of standing industrial wood en bloc were offered for sale).

In spite of a relatively high volume of unsold goods per auction session (from 40% to 50% of ONF standing timber), 2016's results turned out be quite alright for the Frenche sellers.

The financial year 2016 began with the slight price decrease in its first half.

«Depending on the product category, the price of standing timber reduced by 3%-5% over the second half of 2015.» In June, at Forexpo, Cécil Maris, responsible for timber markets monitoring at CRPF d’Aquitaine, expressed an opinion that the price decrease phenomenon had a conjunctural character, and with the timber deficit combined with the lack of the stocks of wind-broken trees, the prices would, at least, stabilise.

His analysis has proven to be exact (see the table below). «This autumn, the maritime pine price remained stable in comparison with May 2016, and demand among its consumers had been growing from one auction session to another with the unsold goods volumes getting lower than those from 5 months before», noted Cécil Maris. In the French south-west, for the maritime pine producers 2017 promises to be favourable.
